Significant opportunities for undergraduate students to conduct research have been made possible by the Georgia Power Environmental Scholars Program since 1991. The Georgia Power Foundation has generously supported this program enabling students to conduct studies in Ecology and Environmental Biology. Students supported in the program are provided a modest monthly stipend during the time they are conducting their research project. The alumni of this program now include students currently in graduate and professional schools, high school biology teachers, medical researchers, public health workers, physicians and dentists.

We have an Annual Georgia Power Environmental Scholars Seminar at the Georgia Power Environmental Laboratory each spring, and the end of the Spring Semester. At this seminar, the Georgia Power Scholar students present illustrated talks on the research studies they conducted that academic year. The invited audience included undergraduates from the Atlanta University Center colleges and Georgia Power Environmental Laboratory personnel. The seminar presentations are followed by an extensive tour of the laboratories.

In past years, students have conducted studies on a wide variety of projects in the broadly defined subjects of ecology and environmental biology, both in the laboratory and in the field. Student research projects have included studies on environmental pollution, water quality, microbiology, animal behavior, physiological ecology, plant-soil relations, solar energy, and hydrogen fuel cell physics.

Community Service is an important part of the development of leadership skills at Morehouse College. The Environmental Scholars Program sponsors community garden work days, work with the Atlanta Community Food Bank and Hands-On-Atlanta, and public school visits to teach science to elementary and middle school pupils.

The Georgia Power Environmental Scholars Program is open to all students in the colleges of the Atlanta University Center. Environmental Scholars candidates are typically solicited from students in the Environmental Biology and Ecology courses as well as introductory level courses at Morehouse College. These courses are open to all students in the colleges of the Atlanta University Center.

Students interested in conducting ecological and environmental research should contact Dr. Blumer in August or September to begin projects in the Autumn semester. Students are expected to work a minimum of 10 hours per week on their research projects.

Each student is required to meet weekly with Dr. Blumer to discuss his or her progress. At the end of the academic year, a written report and a PowerPoint seminar presentation is prepared by each Environmental Scholar.
