Brantley Choral Arranging Competition
an annual competition sponsored by

The National Association of Negro Musicians, Inc.

SATB choral arrangement competition celebrating the

African-American spiritual tradition.
(Work may not be an original work but may be divisi, accompanied or a cappella.)


RULES
1.  The work must be a choral arrangement of a Negro spiritual.
2.  Scores must be legible and in black ink or computer generated. Unreadable scores will be disqualified. Three copies must be submitted for the competition.
3.  Arrangements should be between 3-5 minutes in length.
4.  Arranger’s name must not appear on the score. A nom de plume must be used.
5.  Arranger must not have reached his/her 30th birthday by January 1, 1999. 
6.  The arrangement must not have been previously submitted to any publisher for possible publication.

7.  There Is an entrance fee of $25.00. Checks and money orders should be made payable to NANM, Inc. Please do not send cash.

8.  The arranger must be a member of a National Association of Negro Musicians branch. Note: The $25.00 entrance fee will be applied to non-members for a one year national membership.   Information will be sent to the applicant regarding the NANM branch nearest you.

9.  The arranger's name, address, phone number and Xerox copy of birth certificate, along with NANM branch president’s name  (if applicable), must be sent in a sealed envelope with the copies of the arrangement.

10. The winning arrangement will be performed at NANM's August, 1999 National Convention by the Convention Chorus.

11. The judges decision is final. Judges have the discretion not to award a prize.

12.  Scores will be returned to applicants, providing a self-addressed stamped envelope is included.

13. Scores must be postmarked by April 30, 1999.  

14. The winner will receive an award of $500.00. The work may be published by an authorized NANM publisher. Royalties would be shared by arranger and NANM Brantley Scholarship Fund.  NANM will possess "first rights of refusal" on publishing work. The published winning arrangement must state, "Winner of the National Association of Negro Musicians, Inc. Brantley Choral Arranging Contest."

15. Winner must wait one year before re-entering the contest.

For next year's competition, entries must be postmarked by April 30, 2000.
Prize is awarded at the National Convention in August, 2000.
